RPI Day Seven

I used the text “No Girls Allowed” with the Kea group. The issue was easy to identify and we moved quickly to the response to the provocation: “Anybody should be allowed to play whatever sport they want to” which sparked a lively discussion as they thought of potential barriers to this inclusive position. Their rewrites developed after we focussed on evidence in the text to clarify who and what attitudes were the barrier to including girls. Their solutions discussed who should have the decision making power and how such decisions should be arrived at. Their rewrite made the power balance collaborative between the organisers and the coach. We followed this up with “Just Kidding” by Marisa Maepu I’m developing a critical analysis student guide based on Blair McMillan’s first and new novel “Here Upon the Tide”using Bloom’s Taxonomy. The kids are responding to my draft ideas and we are co-constructing a chapter by chapter critical analysis of the text.

Reading Intensive Day Six

Reading Intensive Day Six - “In retrospect” Our word wall is going really well - changing landscape Reading Intensive Day Seven I really enjoyed today. In the weeks ahead I am going to focus on the ways in which I can support the kids in increasing their depth of thinking in response text particularly with regard to analysing the author's purpose. We will also be looking closely at figurative language. I am looking for resources to help me include independent word study as a part of my reading rotation.
